Accountant, Excise Taxes (#11576)

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting. CPA preferred.

Experience: 1-2 years of experience in accounting, including experience with general ledger and account reconciliations. Tax compliance experience and experience working with Avalara software a plus.

General Summary

Assist with the accounting and regulatory reporting requirements related to excise taxes, primarily related to energy products and heavy vehicles. Prepare monthly excise tax returns for Southern States and our Member Cooperatives, reconciling these returns to the general ledger. Review general ledger transactions, prepare journal entries as needed, and reconcile general ledger accounts at month end. Monitor changes to tax laws and tax rates related to excise taxes, and assist with detailed tax research as needed to comply with federal, state and local excise tax requirements. Assist with any system maintenance as needed for changes in these requirements.

Essential Job Functions

 
Prepare federal and state excise tax returns for Southern States and its member cooperatives, using Avalara software, and reconcile returns to the general ledger.
 
Assist with the monitoring of activity in purchase order tax accounts daily to resolve any issues so that transactions are properly reported on returns in a timely manner. Work with manager to resolve processing issues at locations and tax billing issues with vendors. Prepare journal entries when needed.
 
Prepare monthly account reconciliations for excise tax general ledger accounts.
 
Record receipt of any refunds due from tax authorities and assist with resolving any discrepancies.
 
Monitor changes in federal, state and local excise tax laws and rates, and assist with detailed research as needed to comply with tax laws. Assist with updating excise tax rates in the point of sale system.
 
Proficiently use and maintain the point of sale system, to comply with regulatory reporting requirements.
 
Assist Southern States locations and member cooperatives with excise tax questions or issues in a timely manner.
 
Assist as needed with excise tax audits.
 
Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
